How to identify well cut gem stones

How to identify well cut stones

The cut of a gemstone does affect the value of the stone , a well cut gemstone gives out more luster , is easy to set into jewelry and also pleasing to the eye. To truly appreciate the cutting quality you must use a 10x loupe to see each stone in detail. ( normally gemstone sellers would not give this information because most dealers do carry inferior stuff )

Facet Meeting

Faceting is an art, Each stone is cut into geometric shapes to bring out the best. Every little thing counts , facet meeting is how each facet meets, each facet should meet at points , ( see image ) they should not overlap each other.

Critical Angel
A Ideal cut stone with max light return , the Image shown is a Brilliant or Diamond cut stone , Each stone has a different critical angel and if faceted Properly will give the best brilliance.
A heavy bottom stone where color is saturated and the stones appears darker , these stones are also not easy to set in jewelry as they may touch or scratch the skin .
Shallow cut stones with light passing through the stone, letting the viewer see what's underneath the stone we call this a "fish eye" effect or "light Leak" in the industry. most native cut stones are this.

Other Defects
Horizontal alignment :

Off culet : the culet of the stone would not be at the center of the stone.

Bad polish of surface of stone: Where scratch marks are visible under 10x
